Translations The Basic guide is that everyone one should have at least two or three Bible translations.  Each translation brings a little different sense of the original language.  There is no such thing as a perfect translation nor is there a best translation. Below are some translations you should own and read.
bullet

New American Standard - Tends to be more accurate to the original language, is a little wordy in it's reading.

bullet

New International Version - Easy to read, but sometimes it will paraphrase instead of translate.

bullet

New Century Version - Good readable translation, it tends a little more towards interpretation instead of translation, but at the same time does a good job of it.

bullet

New Living Translation - This is an update of the Living Bible, it translates the passages more than paraphrases them.  Very readable, but still contains some of the characteristics of a paraphrase.

Software

Many software programs offer a lot of tools, like various translations, dictionaries, commentaries, devotionals, and such, for the price.  They make it possible to copy items out of the work being used and placed into sermons and lessons.  They are often a very good value.  The downside is that most people find reading on the computer screen to be harder than reading a book. {Click on the links to go to the makers web site.}
